Death has robbed The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Uganda of a great leader who has been an inspiration to many over the years.
President George Akera has been serving as the local leader (Branch President), of the Masaka congregation of the church, till his passing, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday the 13th of May 2017 at the Masaka referral hospital.
He is remembered for helping members of his congregation to increase their faith in the Saviour Jesus Christ, by extending to them opportunities to serve in various positions of responsibility in the church.
A funeral service was held at the Branch on Sunday the 14th of May 2017 and the burial ceremony took place in his ancestral home in Gulu District the following day.
He has served in this position since the 31st of July 2011 when the branch was organised.
Mr. Ssekitto Robert who has been serving as the first assistant to George has been called as the new Branch President. He is assisted by Henry Kirabo as first assistant (First Counselor), and Mabibi Charles as the second assistant (Second Counselor).

Leaders in the Church serve on a voluntary basis, in addition to thier usual jobs. They do not receive any form of monetary or material compensation for their service to the church.
They may be released from their assignments after a while and a new leaders called to replace them.
They thus do not necesarily move up in hierachy of leadership.
