In a recent dinner held at the Sheraton Hotel in Kampala, Uganda, the First Lady of Uganda was honored with the “Family Values Award”. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints honored Mrs. Janet K. Museveni for her continued support of building strong families in Uganda. The Family Values Award is given to honor community leaders who have made outstanding contributions to the family.

The Award was presented by Elder Tasara Makasi, an Area Authority Seventy for the Church. He and his wife traveled from South Africa to present the award. Elder Makasi said in his presentation, “When we see worthy and exemplary efforts of others in our communities in strengthening and supporting marriages and families, we gratefully applaud these efforts.” He went on to say, “Marriage and family-centered priorities unite the human family as they cut across and supersede any political, economic and religious differences.”
Special guests at the dinner included President and Sister Robert Chatfield, President of the Uganda Kampala Mission and President and Sister Jimmy Carter Okote, President of the Kampala Uganda Stake (diocese) of the Church.
The Alma Family Centre, an organization in Uganda, was the organizer of the Award Dinner. They are a unique organization that is working to strengthen families by offering activates and counseling for families in need of help. Their motto is “Strengthening the Family, Building a Nation”. They are strong advocates for women’s rights and protection for children who are at risk in dysfunctional families.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints doctrine teaches that the family is ordained of God and that marriage between a man and a woman is essential to His eternal plan of happiness. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of marriage and to be reared by a father and mother who honor their marital vows with complete fidelity.
The First Lady of Uganda has clearly stated a consistent message that she is against premarital sex, cohabitation and same gender marriages. The Church continues to support government and community leaders who teach principles consistent with the Doctrines of Christ.
