LDS Church Teams up with KCCA to Beautify Kampala

Sustainability was a big factor of consideration when LDS Church members of the Nsambya Ward in Kampala began looking at possible Mormon Helping Hands projects for 2014. In a joint effort, labeled "Beautify Kampala", Church volunteers and KCCA planted trees along Gaba Road, which runs through their community. On Saturday morning, October 4th, more than 40 members of the Nsambya Ward joined with volunteers from KCCA to plant 50 trees near Gaba Parish.

Steven Kato, Landscape Officer, had previously arranged for the city to dig the holes; so the morning of the project, members mixed fertilizer with soil and Theo Tibihika, Town Clerk, planted the first tree.  Workers then teamed up and moved along the roadside preparing the soil, planting the predetermined varieties of trees, and watering them.

At the completion of the project, Bishop Fred Kamya of the Nsambya Ward conducted a Closing Ceremony.

In his remarks, Mr. Tibihika reminded the volunteers that KCCA’s objective is “to make this city beautiful.”  He went on to say, “I thank you not only for the trees, but for your big hearts.”

John Rugumayo, LC1 for that area, challenged everyone, “Let us begin to care for things because this is our country.”

The funding for the trees was provided through the Humanitarian Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Elder and Sister Hannan (Humanitarian Missionaries) worked with local Church leaders to facilitate the project.
